What I'm Reading - Week 46
Hi all! Here are a few things that have caught my attention the past couple weeks. Hope you enjoy!
Takeaways: Map and measure the critical user journey (how your product works), then find the levers / loops (how your product grows)
Highlights: “Hair-on-fire” and #MonkeyFirst
The Minto Pyramid: How to make recommendations to busy executives
Takeaways: “Start with the answer first.”
When an executive asked a question — “What should we do?” — you were to start your response with, “You should do X,” very crisply and directly. Only then, after you have answered the question, should you present your supporting reasons.
#shortread
The 4 most important factors when evaluating growth opportunities
Summary:
Hypothesis: Why will this idea have a significant impact on metrics?
Investment: How much time will we have to invest in this project?
Precedent: Is there a precedent for this working in the past?
Experience: Is this change a good user experience?”

Hiten Shah's process for new product launches
Highlights: Hiten builds momentum for product launches by setting three separate deadlines: an “internal release just for our team,” a second release for early access customers, and a final release to the outside world “on Product Hunt or to the press.” During this process, his entire focus is on the customer. As he explains, “we don’t spend a lot of time comparing ourselves to what competitors are doing. It always goes back to the customer.”
The privilege of being non-political
Highlight: Those who insist on keeping spaces “non-political” are usually oblivious to the fact that they can demand this because of their inherent privilege.
How to grow a team without losing its soul
Highlight: “We do personal stories because it’s important that people understand that these are real people making these things. A lot of brands are faceless…not human.”
5 principles for goaling your team
Takeaways: Choose goals that are isolated from other teams, goals that are directly influenceable, and goals that are tied to success.
